From cultures of the Avilamycin (Avilamycin A) producing organism, Streptomyces viridochromogenes, strain ETH 23575, a second antibiotic, Avilamycin C, C₆₁H₉₀Cl₂O₃₂ could be isolated in crystalline form. Both Avilamycins belong to the group of the Orthosomycins. By IR., ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR. spectroscopy and by transformation to a common derivative it could be proven that Avilamycin A is a methyl ketone, Avilamycin C the corresponding methyl carbinol.     

A fully automated mass spectrometer for the analysis of organic solids

Automation of a mass spectrometer—computer system makes it possible to process up to 30 samples without attention after sample loading. An automatic sample changer introduces the samples successively into the ion source by means of a direct inlet probe. A process control unit determines the operation sequence. Computer programs are available for the hardware support, system supervision and evaluation of the spectrometer signals. The most essential precondition for automation — automatic evaporation of the sample material by electronic control of the total ion current — is confirmed to be satisfactory. The system operates routinely overnight in an industrial laboratory, so that day work can be devoted to difficult analytical problems. The cost of routine analyses is halved.     

Zur Reaktion des Germaniums mit Germaniumtetrachlorid und zur Existenz der Oxidchloride GeOCl2 und GeOCl6 im Gleichgewicht

On the Reaction of Germanium with Germanium Tetrachloride and on the Existence of the Oxidechlorides GeOCl₂ and GeOCl₆ at the Equilibrium The above equilibrium was measured in a Gauge-manometer and the enthalpy of formation and the entropy for GeCl₂,g were derived from these results. From total pressure measurements and transport experiments of GeO₂ with GeCl₄ follows, that the oxidechlorides Ge₂OCl₆ and GeOCl₂ are not present in measurable concentrations, that means the enthalpy of formation of GeOCl₂ must be higher than ?327 kJ · mol^?1.     

Construction and evaluation of nagR-nagAa::lux fusion strains in biosensing for salicylic acid derivatives

The NagR protein is a response regulatory protein found in the bacterium Ralstonia sp. U2 that is involved in sensing for salicylic acid and the subsequent induction of the operaon just upstream of its gene. The genes encoded for in this operon are involved in the degradation of salicylic acid. Escherichia coli strain RFM443 carrying a fusion of the Photorhabdus luminesscens luxCDABE operon with the nagR gene and upstream region of the nagAa gene was constructed and characterized with respect to its optimum temperature, its response time and kinetics, and its ability to deterctnumerous benzoic acid derivatives. Although capable of detecting 0.5 mM salicylic acid at any temperature between 28 and 40°C, this E. coli strain, labeled DNT5, showed its greatest relative activity at 30°C, i.e., the temperature at which the largest induction was seen. Furthermore, experiments done with numerous benzoic acid derivatives found the NagR protein to be responsive to only a few of the compounds tested, including salicylic acid and 3-methyl salicylic acid and 3-methyl saliyclic acid, and acetyl salicylic acid was the strongest inducer. The lower limits of detection for these compounds with E. coli strain DNT5 were also established, wit the native inducer, salicylic acid, giving the most sensitive response and detectable down to a concentration of about 2 μM. A second lux fusion plasmid was also constructed and transformed into an NahR background, Pseudomonas putida KCTC1768. Within this strain, NAGK-1768, the supplemental activity of the NahR protein on the nagAn promoter, was shown to extend both the range of chemicals detected and the sensitivity.

Structures of Charge-Perturbed or Sterically Overcrowded Molecules. 16. Tetracyanoethylene Sodium Dimethoxyethane The Single crystal structure of [(NC)₂C? C(CN)₂?·Na⊕(H₃CO? CH₂CH₂? OCH₃)]∞ reveals two formula units within the triclinic (P1 ) unit cell. The tetracyanoethylene radical anions are arranged along parallel double layers, which are shifted relative to each other, and in between which are interspersed the sodium counter cations and their dimethoxyethane ligands. The distances within the double layers amount to 300 pm and the ones between them to 385 pm. The six-fold coordinated Na⊕ centers are surrounded by four radical anions with contact distances Na…?N between 250 and 254 pm as well as by a twofold solvent ligand with Na…?O of 238 and 241 pm. Due to the electron transfer to the acceptor molecule, its (NC)₂C-halves twist by 8° and the bond lengths of the N?C? C subunits, bent by each 3°, are shortened up to 2 pm. The structural parameters are compared to those of the analogous potassium salt [TCNE^?K^⊕DME], of the dianion , of the sodium salts [(NC)₃C^?Na^⊕]∞ as well as [(NC)₂C? C(CHCH)₂? C(CN)₂^?Na^⊕]_∞ and, in addition, are discussed based on geometry-optimized MNDO calculations.     

Two-proton correlations in the target fragmentation region of nuclear collisions at 200A GeV

Correlations between protons are studied in the target fragmentation region of reactions of protons and¹⁶O with C, Cu, Ag, Au and of³²S with Al and Au at 200A GeV. The emitted protons were measured with the Plastic Ball detector in the WA80 experiment at the CERN SPS. The comparison of the correlation function with calculations, assuming a spherical, gaussian shaped source with a lifetime τ=0 fm/c, allows the extraction of radius parameters. The values are very close to those expected from the geometry of the target nuclei and increase with the target mass as αA _Target ^1/3 . Even in proton induced reactions the whole target nucleus is involved. The dependence of the radii on centrality, polar angleθ _lab, and energy, and their relation to measured proton yields are presented.     

An ab initio molecular orbital study of the grignard reagents CH3MgCl and [CH3MgCl]2: The Schlenk equilibrium

Ab initio molecular orbital calculations are used to study the modified Schlenk equilibrium: 2RMgCl (RMgCl)² MgR₂ + MgCl₂ Mg(Cl₂)MgR₂ with R=H and CH₃. In the absence of any solvents, calculations indicate that the formation of the various possible bridged dimers (RMgCl)₂ is substantially exothermic. However, using dimethylether as a model solvent, we show that the formation of the dimer (Me₂O)(CH₃)Mg(Cl₂)Mg(CH₃)(OMe₂) is exothermic only when entropic effects are included.
